Düsseldorf, one of the richest cities in Europe, has two faces. In the shadow of wealth, a growing number of children live in poverty. It is not uncommon for meals to be skipped or for portions to get smaller as the month progresses and money runs out. Families rely on food banks and on the bottom shelves in the supermarket where the cheap products are. Super processed foods full of bad carbs, salt, fat and sugar. Instead of expensive fruits and vegetables, families turn to cheap ready-made food. Products that lack all the necessary and appropriate nutrition. The number of children with obesity is growing, children have a devastating lack of iodine and vitamin D, both substances which are essential in brain and bone development. Children suffer from "silent hunger," the body craving proper nutrition.
Consequences: poor concentration, difficulty learning, lack of energy and curiosity, inactive or hyperactive. It prevents children to reach their full potential and we cannot allow it to continue.
Johanna bumps into Emin in the supermarket at night as he's stuffing his pockets. He discovers that the supermarket has a life of its own at night. There's the night cashier, the hectic supermarket manager who wants to launch the latest energy drink "Sugar 3000". And the broccoli is fighting with the crisps over who is more popular with people. Meanwhile, the moth eats what it likes. Because what is a "product" and what does "belong" mean? If you're hungry, you take what's there, right?
Düsseldorf has the image of a "rich" city. Yet every 5th child here is affected by poverty.
Filmmaker Eren Önsöz sheds light on a taboo subject and portrays people who only want one thing: No child should be hungry! All children - whether rich or poor - need affordable and healthy food!
